Her Unexpected Detour by Kyra Jacobs

Kayla has the perfect strategy for a broken heart: work, work, and more work. Then a storm sends her car skidding off the road, stranding her in Mount Pleasant. Fortunately, rescue comes in the form of the incredibly handsome but gruff Brent Masterson. And he's hot enough to tempt Kayla into doing something she never thought she could do...

Brent Masterson swore he would never give into the fierce attraction that's been sizzling between him and Kayla since they first met. He has his own demons, and he won't risk his heart again. Not even for someone as gorgeous and amazing as Kayla. So...how exactly did he end up in Kayla's bed last night?

But sometimes all it takes is an ice storm to show two broken hearts the way home...

Title: Her Unexpected Detour | Series: Checkerberry Inn | Author: Kyra Jacobs | Publisher: Entangled Bliss | Release Date: 8/14/2015 | Genre: Contemporary Romance | Source: Publisher | Rating: 4

This was such a cute little romance and the perfect way to start a new series. Both Kayla and Brent were damaged and realistically flawed characters that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Here’s what’s going on: Kayla’s been accused of pulling a prank that could cost the advertisement company she works for their biggest client. Although Kayla wasn’t the one who doctored the ad, yet she’s the one that’s been put on unpaid leave for a week. Deciding to take a detour on her coffee break, she ends up heading out of town to visit her brother where she runs into a handsome yet surly man who ends up coming to her rescue when she crashed through a fence.

All Brent wants to do is help his grandmother get her bed-and-breakfast spruced up in time for it to reopen, make sure his cousin doesn’t force his grandmother into selling, and stay away from the sexy brunette who seemed to find a way into his heart. Yet Kayla’s here’s to stay, at least until her car’s fixed. Although now that he and Kayla ended up in bed together, he can’t get her out of his mind but she’s intent on leaving.

I liked Kayla. I really enjoyed watching her come into her own as the story unfolded.  She’s had a tough time of it lately, she knows someone set her up at work but she’s afraid to say anything about it because she doesn’t want to upset her father who got her the job. When she first meets Brent, she gets the wrong impression of him and instantly butts heads with him. She’s suffered loss, so rather than opening up, she keeps everyone at arm’s length.

Brent was surly, moody, and completely done with love yet Kayla came along and totally upended his world. He lost his parents in a plane wreck only to have the woman he expected to marry run off with another man. So, love’s not really high up on his list of priorities yet he’s willing to take a chance on Kayla. I also liked that Brent was willing to put his business on hold to help his grandmother get her business back on its feet.

The chemistry between Kayla and Brent was prevalent from the start and only continued to build as the story unfolded. Because both of them had locked their hearts away, they were content to fight the attraction between them and really had to fight through their inner struggles to get it together.

Overall, I really enjoyed Her Unexpected Detour. I enjoyed the main characters and the secondary characters, and I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series.
